Q.  I’m in my early 50’s and was recently diagnosed as having sugar.  I am having a hard time trying to work out what to eat.  The Doc says I must eat healthier and I must not go hungry. But at the same time I need to lose weight! How am I supposed to do that? Help!

Answer:

I have to assume that your diagnosis is type II diabetes mellitus and that you may therefore be overweight since this is the main reason why persons, especially in middle age, get this type of diabetes.  The main cause of overweight is eating too much food generally while at the same time not doing enough exercise.  You should therefore try to lose this excess weight by first increasing your activity level and reducing the amount of calories you get from food.

High calorie foods are generally high in fat and/or sugar.  These are mostly things like pastry, sugared drinks, desserts and the like.  If you cook with oil, margarine/butter or add mayonnaise or other dressings to your salads, then you need to stop this.  Instead of frying and stewing, you may use the oven to cook meats by baking, broiling or grilling.   Persons with diabetes can eat the same healthy food as the rest of the family but they must practice portion control.  This means that the amount of food eaten must be
tailored to meet your individual needs.  To help you develop an appropriate diet with portion control in mind, you need to ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietitian or nutritionist.  All the best.
